Discovering

The artisans of Chanaz

Several stops are recommended to fully enjoy the site!

The Chanaz mill is one of the places where you can admire work done as it was in the past!

Indeed, the miller turns a stone mill and presses like in the old days. He is inexhaustible about his trade, his passion! His eyes light up as soon as he talks about his work, which he cherishes every day. You won’t leave empty-handed…

Another stop at Brûlerie Terroir Café will let you discover all the aromas of coffees from around the world, not to mention the valuable advice from the manager who explains his trade while roasting.

Right next door, discover the candles of Jardin des Senteurs, made from vegetable wax and Grasse fragrances for candles with incomparable scents. You will also find jewelry made from crystals and stones, unique creations for a unique place.

You can visit the Péniche aux Abeilles and its glass beehives on both sides of the canal, and take the opportunity to discover their bee-derived products: whether transformed into cosmetics or in their natural state, the products provided by bees are numerous.

The stroll continues through the shops that follow one another, offering the chance to taste craft beer, lemonade, and chocolates.

Walking along the Savière Canal

And its banks

Some will enjoy spending time on the calm waters of the canal; for this, nothing beats a guided cruise with Bateaucanal to understand the major role it has played: it has served as a natural boundary between Lake Bourget and the Rhône. This 4 km canal is unique in that it changes the direction of its current depending on water levels. Its very calm flow allows for gentle activities such as paddleboarding or canoeing, as well as electric boat rides.

The approach from the banks is equally striking by bike, using the ViaRhôna. This route, which connects Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean, offers a gentle pedal along the Rhône’s banks before reaching Chanaz. It’s a great idea for a family or friends outing to stretch your legs and enjoy shaded spots close to the water. Equipment rentals are available in the village.

Chanaz

And the Footprints of the Past

The village features many reminders of the past: the Maison de Boigne, the dovecote, the communal oven, the old prison… The typical architecture will have you looking up at the details of facades and moss-covered roofs. These characteristics reflect a rich history that you can better understand by participating in the guided tours offered during the summer season and on Heritage Days.

musée gallo-romain-Chanaz

The Gallo-Roman museum also highlights the treasures discovered at Portout. Housed in a former 15th-century Gothic chapel, it is filled with beautiful pieces crafted on site: amphorae, plates, jewelry…

Everyday objects from the Roman era are displayed, made using the unique technique of burnished ceramics found in the region. This production site was highly renowned and exported its products to Switzerland and the Mediterranean basin via the Rhône River.

Time flies by quickly, and you’ll find yourself enchanted by this village with only one desire: to return to this enchanting and bucolic place. Chanaz will stay etched in your memory; one thing is certain: you’ll come back!
